Chapter Eight
After updating the website to add the interview with librarian Dan, Steve and Dirk checked out the forums to see how the fans were reacting. Steve also wanted to make certain the new mods were doing a good job, which they were.
Having seen the footage of the woman on the bridge, the general consensus amongst the fans was that she was the cause of the accidents, though there was a surprisingly vocal minority dredging up the old myth about teenagers exploring the service tunnels in the 80s. There were even a few on the side of the bridge worker with a hammer making an appearance now and again. Loads of discussionâand even the occasional argumentâwere signs of a healthy forum, so the boys were pleased.
The new set might be off to a slow start, but the fans were having fun with it. It was due to Dirk's charisma and Steve's talent as a web producer. In both business and life, the two men made a good team.
Both wished they could film their young friend Hattie. She was charming and materialized beautifully. Unfortunately for the website, Hattie was of an old fire and brimstone religion which believed any sort of photography was akin to worshipping a graven image. Sure, they might have set up a camera to film her without her knowledge, but that would have been rude. Dead though she was, Hattie was their friend.
By the time they called Dan, he'd already had friends contact him to compliment him on his appearance on the show. Dan hadn't even known any of his friends followed the show, but Ghost Chasers had a wide and varied audience.
"Hey, Dan," Dirk said, "we've got a possible name for our lady on the bridge. We were hoping you could look into it."
"You do? How did you get it?"
"Secret mystical source. Like all good reporters, we don't reveal all of our sources. The name we have is Clara Barlow, and she died in the 30s as we thought. She was the wife of a chicken farmer, if it helps."
"Barlow, you say? Hang on, I think I found something about her yesterday afternoon during my research. Let me seeâ¦let me seeâ¦ah, yes, here it is. Clara Barlow. Born in 1914, died in 1936, only twenty-two years old. Resident of Washington township. The records state she drowned, but no particulars. Buried in King Cemeteryâ¦hang on a minuteâ¦yes, that's known as Barlow cemetery these days. It's north of Avon, an old family burial plot."
Dirk and Steve had run into these family cemeteries before. Some were of a decent size and some were no more than a handful of graves on a corner of land. Sadly, many of these smaller cemeteries had been destroyed by landowners who decided they weren't important anymore. There was one in the area where a farmer had got it into his head one day to move the headstones and plow right over it. Not only was it disrespectful, but it also made it nearly impossible to find remains so the grave could be blessed.
